These programs allow an open-ended path for the exploration and development of a range of skills that will be valuable for advanced study in multiple disciplines. As part of the Herberger Institute merger announcement in 2009, the department of dance became the School of Dance and the arts, media and engineering program became the School of Arts, Media and Engineering. To advance the New American University by embedding designers, artists and arts-based inquiry at its core and throughout the communities it serves locally, nationally and internationally. Mau was tasked with bringing the design imperatives outlined in Crow’s “A Manifesto for the New American University” to life around the ASU campus. To do so, Mau proposed using existing challenges and orienting the entire university toward purpose and entrepreneurial learning. Venues and facilities

This core structure is complemented by well-equipped performance facilities, professional opportunities and technologically driven curricula with an interdisciplinary focus. Our internationally recognized faculty encourage collaboration that transcends boundaries and gives students a multitude of opportunities to shine. Founded in 1964, the College of Fine Arts at Arizona State University welcomed its first class of students at the beginning of fall semester 1965. A fourth unit, the University Art Museum, was dedicated to research and to the conservation and preservation of works of art. Comprised of a dynamic combination of disciplines, the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts is a leader in the investigation of creativity and creative practice shaping the 21st century.

School of Arts, Media and Engineering

Our faculty include Laura Cechanowicz, Ana Herruzo, Nonny de la Peña, Nick Pilarski, Lauren Ruffin and more. At the Herberger Institute, we have a tradition of top-ranked programs across all of our schools, we are among the first to offer a proficiency-based digital media degree in the U.S., and the ASU Art Museum has been called the "single most impressive contemporary art venue in Arizona. I also have to mention Professor Kimberlee Swisher, I was her teacher’s assistant for quite a bit and although I never took a class with her since she teaches undergrad, she really inspired me to be a better educator and mentor and understand how to relate to people better when tackling problems. Really, all the faculty and staff within AME deserve recognition as they are great in helping you find a solution. If you have a crazy idea or a random question, even if it’s really out there, they’ll ask for more details and help find a solution. Rodriguez Vega entered graduate studies with a background in communication and interest in the interactions that take place between humans and computer systems.

Each semester, the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts recognizes students at convocation. King grew up in Mesa, Arizona, where he worked with and was mentored by theater director Matthew Erickson at Red Mountain High School. Mau has served as a visiting professor at institutions worldwide, including the program in Graduate Architecture and Urban Design, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn; the Getty Research Institute, California; and the Central Academy of Fine Art, Beijing.

Degree Programs

Whether you practice music, architecture, dance, theatre, design, visual art or other disciplines, creative excellence requires both a mastery of your field and the development of your own creative expression. Art, dance, design, digital culture, film, music, theatre and more classes are available to all ASU students. Several courses fulfill CS, HU or L general studies designations and awareness area requirements for C, CS, H, HU, G, L or SB. Our cross-institute programs offer students an opportunity for cross-disciplinary study. Theory of Change

All prospective undergraduate students and families interested in our programs are invited. The ASU California Center Broadway and Grand locations are home to several Herberger Institute programs.

History of design at ASU

In 2000, the College of Fine Arts was named The Katherine K. Herberger College of Fine Arts, in honor of Valley arts philanthropist Katherine K. A longtime Phoenix resident, Herberger championed the support and growth of the College of Fine Arts and encouraged its community outreach programs. The schools of art, music, theatre and film, the department of dance and the arts, media and engineering program comprised the academic units of what was then known as the Katherine K. Herberger College of Fine Arts. With more than 8,000 students, more than 750 faculty members, more than 125 program options and a tradition of top-ranked programs, we are committed to redefining the 21st-century design and arts school. Our college is built on a combination of disciplines unlike any other program in the nation, comprising ASU Art Museum, ASU FIDM, The Design School, The Sidney Poitier New American Film School and the Schools of Art; Arts, Media and Engineering; and Music, Dance and Theatre. The Herberger Institute connects to places across the region through its partnerships, programming and physical presence at sites throughout Arizona and in California.

Portfolio reviews, milestones or interviews typically occur after the first year in the program or after a certain number of required courses are completed. Students wishing to major in BA/BM music degrees must successfully complete an audition prior to enrolling as a music major at ASU. Students wishing to major in BFA dance are required to attend the Dance Festival Admission Day prior to enrolling as a dance major at ASU. King participated in several shows at ASU, including “the living’life of the daughter mira” and “Anthropocene.” He has also contributed to theater labs and appeared in films produced by First Nation students at The Sidney Poitier New American Film School. Additionally, King has taken part in the development of new Indigenous works, including "The Neverland" by Madeline Sayet and "Olivia" by Claude Jackson Jr.

The Herberger Institute’s partnership with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the largest encyclopedic art museum in the western United States, also connects the Herberger Institute to L.A. The Creative Economy Hub LA will house labs/studios that are designed to provide use-inspired research and creative work in key areas of transformation for the creative industries. Students have the chance to study in Los Angeles and earn a BA in Film with a concentration in filmmaking practices or a BFA in Film and Media and Production from The Sidney Poitier New American Film School at the ASU California Center, one of three locations for The Poitier Film School. The Pat Tillman Center continues to welcome sponsorship to help support the program for years to come.

Tuomisto-Bell, a marine veteran and professional artist, witnessed that sense of calm sweep over the five veterans over the course of three weeks. A week before the first class, he suffered a heart attack while hiking South Mountain in Phoenix. Some of our degrees require additional audition, interview, milestone or portfolio requirements. This means that Design and Arts Corps learning is scaffolded into multiple modules offered in hybrid online/in-person learning experiences.
